Happy 3rd birthday Snap Chat (it’s a bit late, sorry about that). It has been a great rise to fame for the platform, who have some big brands taking a serious interest in the capabilities; Mcdonalds and Taco Bell to name a couple. Originally called Picaboo, the platform has gone from strength to strength, so much so Facebook tried to buy it, twice. Whilst 1 billion and 3 billion dollar offers sound great for most of us, the founders (Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy) thought otherwise. Greater men than I to turn down that kind of cash.
The platform has over 100 million active users per month, with 71% of its users being under 25. Impressively, 1 in 4 smartphones here in blighty have an active account. From a marketing perspective, I think it’s the one to keep an eye on. Facebook see 3 Billion dollars worth of potential but it’s relatively immature in advertising ability. I have reservations on customers engaging with CTA’s through Snap Chat, but that remains largely untried. The segment of users this attracts is very defined, so if your brand is targeting an older generation this isn’t the platform for you. A younger fashion brand however, get your teeth stuck in.
Without being too negative though, I like this platform. It’s simple, fun and a great way to communicate – pictures tell a 1,000 words and all that.
So well done Snap Chat, good on you for sticking to your guns and not being bought by the big boys. We hope you enjoyed your cake.
