You’re a small business owner and everyone and everything is telling you to ‘get social’. Now you’ve set up a Facebook, maybe a LinkedIn or Twitter. Here are some tips to get the most out of it.

Quality not quantity

Nobody likes spam – it doesn’t matter if it comes through your letterbox, your inbox or your newsfeed people don’t want to see it. It’s a waste of time creating it and sending it out because such a tiny amount of people will see it. Not only that, if anyone does bother to look and it’s not of a high enough quality they’ll mentally link your company with spam.

Instead, craft quality content and do it as regularly as you can manage. One post a week? That’s fine! Just make sure it’s something your customers will find interesting or engaging. You’re customers pick your small company for that personal touch so let your personality shine through and engage with them. Relevant new articles or memes, company news, new products – all of these are fair game and count as quality content.

 

Expand your circle

The beauty of social media is that it allows you to communicate directly with your customers and fans, unlike traditional advertising which is simply shouting into the void and hoping someone hears your message. With social you get to listen as much as you get to show or tell, make sure to remember that!

By engaging with your audience you can turn customers into brand ambassadors. Even upset customers can be turned around and used to show how great your company is! You should also reach out to bloggers and other social media users with large followings to help expand your social circle.

 

Don’t be afraid to advertise

Social isn’t only about chatting to followers – you can advertise too! Now I don’t mean just putting up posts about your latest offerings, what I mean is that you can usual Pay Per Click advertising to get your message out to the masses.

A little bit of money can go a long way and with the targeting available you can put your message in front of receptive eyes.
