The goal of Facebook’s News Feed is to “show you the content that matters to you.” With this in mind, there’s a big change coming that will affect users and advertisers alike!
Facebook need to balance updates from friends and public figures, publishers, businesses and community organisations users are connected to. To better this balance they have been testing how users experience the site and are now bringing in three changes to the way content is shown:
• Users who don’t follow many pages or have many friends will now see more content. Previously there were rules to stop multiple posts from the same page appearing but these will be relaxed so that these users will see more stuff.
• The second update prioritises updates from friends and family users care about to ensure that important and personal updates won’t get lost.
• The third and final update will weed out stories of friends liking or commenting on a post. These stories will now appear lower down the News Feed.
This is good news for users looking for a more personal experience but not for those who use Facebook for finding content their friends like or for keeping up with brands they like.
It’s also bad news for brands who still rely on the organic reach of their posts for getting the message out. If you want to find out more about using paid advertising on Facebook you can read about it here.
